Covid-19 in the time of "the selfie"

While the world has essentially come to a stop because of Covid19, like many I can’t help but reflect on the generosity of all those essential workers who help to keep us going on a daily basis. The nurses, doctors, first responders, lab technicians, grocery clerks, police, firemen and food service staff.

These people for reasons we may never know have put themselves at risk for us. They have demonstrated courage, hope, fearlessness, fortitude, love, tenderness, leadership, honesty, vulnerability, patience and supportiveness throughout this global epidemic. These caring acts characterize the best in any civil society. While it’s hard to quantify what these actions have on a society in the long run I can honestly say in the short term I’m encouraged and inspired to be a better person by what I am witnessing.

In our own industry salons and stylists have been helping each other over Zoom calls, Instagram and Facebook to stay connected with their clients and one another. We’ve helped each other tweak our online stores and organize survival color kits which has helped keep our businesses somewhat afloat, and have helped each other navigate the PPP loan system which is very confusing. The hair community has been so supportive and I’m so proud. I believe that one of the lasting results of this pandemic in our society is the movement towards a more close-knit community. Eventually our fast paced world will resume and I’d like to think we can choose selflessness and protect this new found community.
