"Florals for spring, groundbreaking", Our fave looks of NYFW SS20

All kidding aside, we love florals at SJ, as we are having a floral mural installed to be unveiled later this year, but moving on…

“I Love fashion week, did it for ten years two seasons a year. It taught me to love styling and be challenged in ways i hadn't before. Styling hair backstage had this frenetic chaotic creative energy and one had to move fast and have very skilled hands to work in that kind of environment. Every season before FW started we would have a prep class where we would work on the fundamental skills needed to be successful for the stylist we were working with. The ponytail. curling iron set and double french twist were skills we practiced and were timed on and then given feedback from the lead team member and it would tell you what team you were placed in, either A, B or C. Its a whole process of keeping the chaotic frenetic energy backstage organized and run efficiently. “A” team would set up first then depending on number of models, then “B” and “C” would assist accordingly. It was a high pressure emotional setting where praise came rarely and scolding was dealt out often, depending who the stylist was. Some were nicer than others…”

“…And that is just how it goes, I am forever grateful for the experiences and friends made.” -Nicholas

Here are some of our favorites.

For Spring/summer 2020, Marc Jacobs show was simply breathtaking with the designer referencing the 70’s with velvet and florals abound for the 59 looks. We couldn’t help but notice his tributes to Cabaret and Liza as Sally Bowels with waxed over brows and drawn on liner and lashes, but it was the sumptuousness and femininity, the textures and layering of textiles of the collection that we fell for. Each look felt now, strong and theatrical and also took us back to a time of days gone by Nyc.

The hair was led by legendary hairdresser, Guido and his team of stylists creating the intricate hair styles. Assisting his team is a masterclass in hair and how the team works together too create theses masterpieces.

What is inspiring to us is that Marc always tells a story and draws you into the narrative asking you to play and take part in the fantasy. Its always magic.

At Proenza Schouler the vibe was 80’s maximalist but updated with hair pulled back into sleek wet looking ponytails with leather wrapped around the ponytails. It felt a bit Robert Palmer “Addicted to Love” with shapes and corners and shoulder pads, elegance and small waists. We love!

Prabal Gurung’s show, a celebration of the label’s 10th anniversary. Sun-bleached tie-dyed prints came in an array of sorbet colors, while florals weren’t just in traditional rose prints, but also in the hands of models as they carried bouquets of fresh blooms. The show’s diverse casting took a political turn when, at the end of the show, each model came out in sashes that read: “Who gets to be an American?”

The hair led by hairdresser Laurent was beautiful and refined, pulled back off the face with a “wet look'“ and soft natural waves.

These are just a few of the many many outstanding designers whose work was fun, gorge, predictable, off the wall, carefree and cool. At some of the shows the hair was strict and uniform and was tied closely to the look and feel of the clothes and at others, celebrating the individuality and personal style of the models telling their own unique story. Fashion, culture and politics thrive on both and to us will always be New York.
